Blow Your Horn, But No Yellow Teeth! Promote, Not Boast.

Most of us do some self-promotion in our career, or even in social life. We try to help others see what we have accomplished, what more we can achieve, and what we can do for others.

Often while we are self-promoting, we may also be turning other people off. One needs to be suave about doing self-promotion lest others begin seeing him or her arrogant, conceited, or a sycophant. This is as applicable in a social setting as it is in a professional environment.

Consider the story of Nash, a young cardiologist finishing up his fellowship in sub-specialty, Heart Failure. He was invited to present his research findings at the World prestigious medical conference in Nice, France. He needed input about his speech, and he also wanted to spread the news of his coup.

Nash approached a well-known, senior surgeon at his university hospital. The famous surgeon had previously presented a case at the same annual conference. He explained that he’d love to get his advice about issues that would spark the audience’s interest. He also wanted to know how to frame his remarks to avoid provoking controversial questions from the notoriously skeptical group.

The senior surgeon at the university hospital was not only pleased that the illustrious conference had taken notice of one of the university hospital’s rising stars, but she was flattered by the advice request. She told the other professionals about Nash’s recognition and worked closely with him to prepare his talk, advancing his prospects both inside and outside the organization.
